IQNA – The Gazi-Husrev-beg Library in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has mounted an exhibition of rare manuscript copies of Quran translation.

Holy Quran

The exhibition has been held on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

Hamza Korutanović, the expert presenter of this exhibition, explained that in regard to translations of the Quran into Bosnian, the Gazi Husrev-beg Library houses three notable manuscripts.

Two of these copies include translations by Muhammad Pania and Jamaluddin Čaušević, while the third translation belongs to Basim Kurkuta, the most prominent Quran translator in Bosnia, he said.

He added that these three Bosnian translations of the Quran are extremely valuable for both the library and for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as they are the only three manuscript translations of the Quran in the Bosnian language preserved in the country’s manuscript collections.

The Gazi-Husrev-beg Library holds 20 manuscript copies of Quran translations, some of which are in Ottoman Turkish, and Persian.

In addition to the manuscripts, printed translations are also of great importance. The library preserves 10 printed translations of the Quran in Bosnian.

Translations in 16 foreign languages, including Romanian, Esperanto, Czech, Hungarian, and Japanese, are also part of this collection.

Korutanović explains that some of these translations have unfortunately been lost, but there is clear evidence of their existence.
